In a significant diplomatic shift, a core group of six nations—the UK, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Japan—issued a joint statement pledging to ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. The coalition condemned Iran’s “de facto closure” of the waterway and expressed readiness to contribute maritime assets to protect commercial shipping. This “Hormuz Pact” has since been joined by over 20 other nations, including Australia and the UAE, signaling a broad international front against Tehran’s energy blackmail.
However, the coalition faces internal fractures. Swiss Defense Minister Martin Pfister has formally labeled the U.S. and Israeli air strikes as “violations of international law,” warning that such “unlawful” force risks a global asymmetric war. Pfister expressed deep concern that the conflict would trigger a massive refugee wave into Europe, an outcome he believes the current Allied strategy has failed to account for.
Expert Analysis: China’s Strategic “Quiet Victory”
While the West remains mired in military costs, many analysts believe China is the structural winner of the 2026 war. The surge in oil prices has exposed what energy experts call the “fossil fuel fragility” of the global economy. Daan Walter, a principal analyst at the think tank Ember, described the current crisis as “Asia’s Ukraine moment,” noting that China’s dominance in the Electric Vehicle (EV) industry allows it to escape the oil-security trap that is currently paralyzing its rivals.
“Oil is the Achilles’ heel of the global economy,” Walter noted. “Unlike the oil crises of the 1970s, there is now a better alternative. Electric vehicles are increasingly cost-competitive… making them a common-sense choice for countries wishing to insulate themselves from future shocks.”
This sentiment is echoed by industry leaders like Jaturont Komolmis, who observed at the 2026 Bangkok Motor Show that the war has created a “golden opportunity” for Chinese EV makers to capture markets desperate for energy independence. As the 48-hour clock ticks down, the world is watching to see if the IRGC will blink or if the Middle East is about to enter a phase of total infrastructure warfare.
